Australia 1887 Melbourne Half Sovereign – AU Details Grade
Slabbed and authenticated by PCGS – subsequently removed from the slab and dumped at auction. I don’t think the person speculating on this coin realised realised the importance of this 1887 Melbourne Young Head. One of 9000 coins produced and it would have graded AU58 without the damage – thus 2nd finest behind two examples graded MS61.
The coin exhibits UNC characteristics in the hand. Definitely a coin for a collector wanting THE key date in Australian Young Head half sovereigns. Minor tool marks are rendered visible by a macro lens in the field between VICTORIA and DEI. This grade of 1887 Melbourne Half Sovereign is EXTREMELY RARE!
Note that this coin was authenticated by PCGS, ships with an AU Details Grade certificate, but has been removed from the slab.
