Australia 1880 Sydney Half Sovereign – PCGS XF45
- S-3862E Cross Buried
A semi-key date of 72-74,000 minted. This is the new type 5/4 obverse/reverse dies as the Royal Mint continued attempts to improve half sovereign quality. They were never really destined to succeed – die steel quality was the issue.
Given that only five coins are graded better than this one, with AU55 being the top grade, this 5/4 variety is arguably a sleeper. One to sit on for the long term.
