Australia 1883 Sydney Half Sovereign PCGS AU55

  • S-3862D Cross not Buried
  • Only three examples graded finer
  • The scarcer type 3 obverse

In 1880 the Royal Mint switched to the type 4 obverse die in ongoing attempts to improve half sovereign production. However, Australia continued to receive the old obverse die until 1887. More information is available in Top End Coin’s Library of Essential Reading – see research conducted by the author on the Sixth Head Half Sovereign. 1883 Sydney type 3 reverses are one of the scarce varieties of the period.
