Australia 1887S Half Sovereign PCGS AU58: S-3871 Spread JEB

The oft-ridiculed obverse design of the jubilee head series (according to McDonald) was executed by Sir J.E. Boehm.

The three varieties of the designer’s initials compound the relatively modest mintage of 134,000 examples. Normal spacing, close spacing and small spread spacing, with this example being the third.

This example in MS grade will set you back $3,500 and $1700 in aUNC according to Renniks, therefore well priced to sell.

It’s perhaps not so well known that the young head varieties minted in the same year are key dates.
