Australia 1955 Perth Obverse Penny – PCGS AU58
- Scarce Perth Obverse
The so-called “mule”. While technically not correct (a mule is the wrong coin die used to stamp the coin), the common Melbourne obverse was supplemented by a very small number of indigenous Perth obverse strikes. In 1956 it is the opposite, the leftover Melbourne dies strike a small number of Perth Mint coins.
Can you see something else about the coin? It’s got a scalloped edge – a minor planchet clip created during the minting process. I found an MS62 graded coin reserved by a buyer for $600 (see image below). That’s how important and difficult this variety is in higher grades.
