Australia 1887 Melbourne Half Sovereign – PCGS AU50
- S-3863B Young Head
A key date in Young Head Half Sovereigns – approx. 9,000 produced. Australia was well into a credit crunch by this period, which ultimately led to the depression of 1893 on the back of excessive land speculation. As credit was gold at the time, there was less requirement for bank reserves.
This type 5/3 obverse/reverse is the last of the toothed denticle reverse dies. Likely one die only and produced concurrently with the new Jubilee Head series to mark the 50 year reign of Queen Victoria. This coin is the second example in AU50 I’ve handled, with one other located in England. Scarce in this grade.
